About
KuCoin
KuCoin is one of the deepest altcoin derivatives venues in crypto, launched in 2017 and serving more than 30 million users across 160+ regions under CEO BC Wong, who took over as part of the exchange's compliance reset.
Its futures platform runs perpetuals at up to 125x leverage across one of the widest long-tail catalogs anywhere, and traders paying fees in KCS take 20% off while top VIP tiers earn maker rebates.
Regulation cuts both ways here. KuCoin EU holds a MiCA license through Austria's FMA, while the global entity pleaded guilty in the US and paid over $297 million, exiting the American market as part of the settlement.
Security has held since the exchange's defining test, the 2020 hack of roughly $281 million, most of which was recovered with the remainder covered by insurance. Monthly Proof of Reserves now shows major assets backed above 100% under ISO 27001 and SOC 2 certification.

KuCoin
perpetuals data
KuCoin is a Seychelles-based exchange launched in 2017 that built its identity as the venue where altcoins list first, carrying more than 700 assets across its markets and one of the deepest long-tail derivatives catalogs in our perpetual exchange rankings. CEO BC Wong, formerly chief legal officer, took over in January 2025 as the founders stepped away under the terms of the US settlement, and the exchange has rebuilt its posture around mandatory KYC and licensed regional entities since.
For perpetual traders the draw is breadth and leverage on tokens larger venues list late or never, backed by both simplified and professional futures interfaces, trading bots, and copy trading. Tokenized xStocks equities trade on the spot side, though KuCoin's derivatives remain crypto-only.
KuCoin charges 0.02% maker and 0.06% taker fees on perpetual futures at the base tier, and twelve VIP levels keyed to trading volume and KCS balance compress rates until top tiers earn maker rebates. The taker rate runs one basis point above Binance and OKX at standard, which the KCS discount more than closes.
Holding any KCS and enabling KCS Pay cuts 20% off both spot and futures fees, per the exchange's own fee overview, and the token carries a monthly buyback-and-burn plus a daily revenue-share bonus for holders above a small threshold, so the discount mechanism doubles as the exchange token's core utility. New accounts registered through a KuCoin referral code stack a further standing discount on top of any tier.
KuCoin settles perpetual funding every 8 hours, transferring payments between long and short holders based on the premium between contract and index prices, and the exchange takes no cut. Rates float per contract, so its long-tail listings routinely carry sharper funding than majors when positioning crowds one side of a thin book.
The mechanism itself was overhauled this year. KuCoin rolled out a new funding rate algorithm across 140 perpetual contracts in early June and extended it to 227 more contracts three weeks later, targeting stability and accuracy in how rates track supply and demand. Changes at that scale shift the math for funding rate arbitrage strategies that lean on KuCoin's spreads against other venues, and live rates for every KuCoin pair run on the CoinPerps funding rates dashboard.
KuCoin Futures runs USDT-margined perpetuals as its core market alongside coin-margined contracts, with leverage up to 125x on select pairs and cross or isolated margin per position. Futures Lite offers a stripped-down interface for newer traders while Futures Pro carries full order types, and the distinction between these leveraged contracts and simply holding tokens is unpacked in our guide to crypto perps vs spot trading.
Leverage at the catalog's edges deserves respect. The same long-tail listings that make KuCoin attractive carry thin books where liquidation cascades travel fast, and the exchange's share of forced closures during altcoin volatility is visible on our liquidations tracker.
KuCoin's regulatory story runs through two opposite chapters. In the United States, operator Peken Global pleaded guilty in January 2025 to operating an unlicensed money transmitting business, paying more than $297 million comprising a $184.5 million forfeiture and a roughly $112.9 million criminal fine, agreeing to exit the US market for at least two years, and removing founders Chun Gan and Ke Tang from management under deferred prosecution agreements. A subsequent CFTC resolution entered in court this year is reported to extend that exit into an effectively indefinite bar on serving US customers.
In Europe the direction reversed. KuCoin EU Exchange GmbH received a MiCA CASP license from Austria's FMA in November 2025, passported across 29 EEA countries and listed on ESMA's register, though the rollout has been rough. The FMA imposed supervisory restrictions on the entity in February over compliance shortcomings before easing them in May, and the EU entity operates as a spot broker whose license scope excludes running a trading platform, so KuCoin perpetuals are not part of the regulated European offering. Alongside these sit AUSTRAC registration in Australia and FIU registration in India, and the country-level picture is maintained in our KuCoin restricted countries list.
KuCoin serves users in more than 160 regions with mandatory identity verification everywhere, and unverified accounts are limited to closing positions and withdrawing. The United States is fully off the map under the settlement terms, Canada, Singapore, mainland China, and Hong Kong are restricted, and sanctioned jurisdictions including Iran, North Korea, and Syria are blocked. Attempting to bypass the US block by VPN is grounds for account closure with no regulated recourse.
European access runs through the licensed Austrian entity for spot services only, so EEA traders wanting perpetuals face the same gap as on other partially licensed venues, a landscape compared in our guide to the best crypto futures platforms in Europe.
KuCoin's security record includes the test most exchanges never face. In September 2020 attackers stole roughly $281 million in a breach of its hot wallets, and the exchange recovered about 84% of the funds through chain-level cooperation and token freezes, covering the remainder from insurance so users were made whole. No comparable breach has occurred since, and the incident reshaped its custody practices around deeper cold storage and tighter key management.
Today the platform publishes monthly Proof of Reserves showing above 100% backing for major assets including BTC, ETH, USDT, and USDC, holds ISO 27001 and SOC 2 Type II certifications, and maintains a User Safety Fund as an additional backstop. The residual risks are the ones certifications don't cover, an enforcement history that shows jurisdictional exposure is real, and the counterparty risk that never reaches zero on any centralized venue.
KuCoin contests the altcoin-derivatives lane against Gate and MEXC, matching them on listing speed with a middle position on everything else, more licensed than MEXC, less than Gate's MiCA-plus-VARA map, cheaper than Bitget on makers once KCS is toggled, thinner than Bybit on major-pair depth. Its 125x cap and long-tail catalog serve the same audience MEXC courts, with the meaningful difference that KuCoin's US chapter is closed by settlement rather than left ambiguous.
The structural gap against the top tier is regulated derivatives access, since neither its EU license nor any other covers perps. Side-by-side data across every venue runs on our comparison hub, and market-wide positioning updates in real time on the open interest dashboard.
